How to spot real shilajit, and what each check actually proves
Eight checks a European buyer can run on pure shilajit resin: what the label must legally carry, what a certificate of analysis covers, what home tests miss.

You cannot tell whether shilajit is real by looking at it. The checks that separate genuine material from a filled jar are documentary, not sensory: the mandatory particulars the label must legally carry, a certificate of analysis naming the laboratory and the method, and a seller who will answer a direct question in writing. The flame test and the water test that dominate English search results discriminate almost nothing, because the cheapest way to fake dark resin behaves in both exactly as real material does.
In 2026 the state food control laboratory CVUA Stuttgart published results from twelve shilajit products sold into the German market. The pattern was not heavy metal contamination but thin material, foreign substances and illegal advertising. The eight checks below are ordered by what they prove, and you can run each one today.
How we ranked these eight checks
Every check below was assessed against the same five criteria, and each entry states where it fails one of them.
Discrimination: does the check separate genuine material from an imitation, or only describe what shilajit is like? A check that a good product and a bad product both pass is not a check.
Falsifiability: can the seller’s answer be compared against a document or a legal requirement? An answer nobody can contradict is worth nothing.
Cost to fake: a test that costs two francs to defeat is decoration; one requiring an accredited laboratory report is not.
Jurisdiction: is this a requirement in EU, UK and Swiss law, or a marketing convention a seller invented? Only the first is enforceable.
Availability: can you run it now, without equipment, before you pay? A check needing a mass spectrometer is useless to a buyer.

Room temperature behaviour and warm water
A jar of shilajit pure resin holds a viscous natural exudate, so its consistency tracks temperature. Cold from a cupboard it is firm and barely yields to a spoon; warmed in the hand for a few minutes it becomes slow and stringy and pulls into a thread. Stirred into warm water it should disperse into a dark, slightly cloudy solution rather than sit as a lump or leave grit.
The behaviour is worth observing and worth almost nothing as proof. The CVUA Stuttgart survey found one sample in which the substances typical of shilajit were not detectable at all, and suspected in others that a darker, tar like appearance came from caramelised sugar. Caramel dissolves in warm water and softens in the hand. So does the real thing.
The catch is that texture is the cheapest property to imitate. It applies doubly to format: pure shilajit gummies and capsules cannot be assessed by any physical check, because the material is already diluted into a carrier.
Watch for:
- Green flag: firm when cold, slow and stringy when warm, disperses in warm water without grit.
- Red flag: sandy sediment, an oily film, or a smell of nothing.
- What it proves: the jar contains a viscous resin rather than a powder blend or a syrup.
- What it does not prove: that the resin is shilajit, or that it is clean.
Taste, smell and residue
Genuine shilajit resin tastes bitter, smoky and strongly mineral, with a metallic edge that stays on the tongue for several minutes. The smell is earthy and faintly acrid, closer to wet rock than to anything sweet.
That gives you one practical signal: sweetness. A resin that tastes even slightly sweet, or of caramel rather than minerals, is worth querying with the seller in writing. That is the direction of adulteration the CVUA Stuttgart chemists suspected, and it is the one flavour note a genuine mineral exudate has no reason to carry.
The catch is that your palate has no calibration, and bitterness can be produced as cheaply as darkness.
Watch for:
- Green flag: bitter, smoky, mineral, with a lingering metallic finish.
- Red flag: sweetness, caramel notes, or a flavour that fades in seconds.
- What it proves: the presence of a bitter mineral rich material, and the absence of obvious sugar.
- What it does not prove: species, origin, contaminant load or fulvic acid content.
The mandatory label particulars
This is the first check with legal force behind it. Under regulation 6 of the Food Supplements (England) Regulations 2003, a supplement sold in Great Britain must carry the name of the category of the substance or an indication of its nature, the portion recommended for daily consumption, a warning not to exceed that daily dose, a statement that supplements are not a substitute for a varied diet, and a statement that the product should be kept out of the reach of young children. EU and Swiss requirements descend from the same directive, so those five appear across every market we sell into.
On top of those, the general food information rules require the name of the food, the ingredients list, the net quantity, a best before or use by date, and the name and address of the food business operator responsible for the information. GOV.UK is explicit that a Great Britain product needs that operator address in the UK, printed at a minimum x height of 1.2 millimetres like every other mandatory particular.
This is a thirty second check, as valid for pure shilajit in the UK as for a Swiss or German listing. Open the product photographs and read the label. If the five particulars are missing, or no named business with a real UK or EU address appears, the seller has failed the most basic rule in the category.
The catch is that a compliant label is a floor. Every one of the twelve samples in the German survey carried a label, and the survey still found foreign substances in all twelve.
Watch for:
- Green flag: all five supplement particulars present, plus a named food business operator with a UK or EU address.
- Red flag: no daily portion, no warning against exceeding it, or an address that is only a web form.
- What it proves: the seller has met the minimum legal labelling duty in this market.
- What it does not prove: anything about what is inside the jar.
What the seller claims the product does
This check inverts the usual logic. Instead of asking what a seller promises, ask whether the promise is legal: in the EU, the UK and Switzerland a health claim on a food supplement is permitted only if it has been authorised, whether or not it happens to be true.
The German survey makes the problem measurable. Objections were raised against 83 per cent of the samples for unauthorised health claims, and against a third for claims referring to disease. The wording “rich in fulvic acids” was itself judged inadmissible. The mineral content did not support the marketing either: iron averaged 0.1 milligrams per recommended portion, against the 2.1 milligrams needed before a product may be described as a source of iron at all.
That makes it the fastest quality proxy available. A seller writing about hormones, energy or ageing in a product description is either unaware of the law it trades under or indifferent to it.
The catch is that quiet copy is not evidence of good material. It only removes one large category of seller from your list.
Watch for:
- Green flag: the page describes the substance, the sourcing and the testing, and nothing about your body.
- Red flag: disease references, hormone references, “rich in fulvic acids”, before and after imagery.
- What it proves: the seller understands the regulatory framework it sells under.
- What it does not prove: purity, identity or potency.
The certificate of analysis and who issued it
A certificate of analysis is a laboratory report on one batch. It should name the laboratory, the batch number, the date, each analyte tested, the method, the result and the limit of detection. Ask for the certificate matching the batch code on the jar you would receive, not a specimen document.
Then read the scope rather than the headline. Eight of the nine samples in the German survey advertised as laboratory tested were judged misleading, because the testing behind the claim typically covered only microbiology and heavy metals. A laboratory reports what it was asked to look for. Mineral oil hydrocarbons were not on those requests, and four of the twelve samples carried mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons up to 290 milligrams per kilogram, with one judged unsafe and not marketable on its aromatic mineral oil content.
So the question is which laboratory, and accredited for what. ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for the competence of testing laboratories, and an accredited laboratory holds a defined scope listing the tests it may perform. Accreditation for microbiology says nothing about mineral oil analysis.
The catch is that a full certificate costs real money per batch, which is why so few small sellers hold one, and why “laboratory tested” is worth nothing on its own.
Watch for:
- Green flag: a batch matched report from a named, accredited laboratory, with methods and detection limits printed.
- Red flag: an undated image, no batch number, no laboratory name, or a scope covering only microbiology.
- What it proves: what was measured in that batch, to what sensitivity.
- What it does not prove: anything about analytes that were not requested, or about any other batch.
The fulvic acid percentage and its method
A fulvic acid percentage is the most quoted number in this category and the least comparable. Fulvic and humic acids are not discrete molecules; they are operational classes defined by how they behave in solution at different pH values. The number depends on the procedure that produced it, and two honest laboratories using two procedures will return two different figures for the same jar.
There is a standardised route. Lamar, Olk, Mayhew and Bloom published a validated method in the Journal of AOAC International in 2014, extracting with sodium hydroxide, precipitating humic acid at pH 1, isolating fulvic acid on a nonionic resin and quantifying both gravimetrically, precisely because commercial demand had outrun existing methods. It was not written for food supplements, and no method is legally required on a shilajit label.
So a percentage with no named method beside it is uninterpretable, and comparing two labels on percentages alone is meaningless. Ask which method produced the figure. A seller who cannot name one has bought the number rather than measured it. What the percentage measures is covered in our guide to fulvic acid.
The catch is that even a correctly measured, correctly attributed percentage describes a chemical fraction, not quality, and certainly not an effect.
Watch for:
- Green flag: a percentage printed with the analytical method and the laboratory that produced it.
- Red flag: a round number, a range, or a figure above what any method would plausibly return.
- What it proves: the fraction one named procedure extracted from one batch.
- What it does not prove: that a higher figure is better, or comparable to any other label.
What “purified” and shodhana mean
Raw shilajit collected from rock is not the material anyone should sell. Shodhana is the traditional Ayurvedic purification step; modern producers use filtration and controlled drying to remove insoluble rock, sand and plant debris. “Purified” on a label refers to that removal of gross material.
The distinction matters because purification and testing answer different questions. Purification removes what you can see. Testing tells you what remains that you cannot. What contamination does has its own article; worth noting here is that the German survey found no sample with excessive heavy metal levels, and foreign substances in all twelve.
The catch is that “purified”, “traditionally purified” and “shodhana processed” are unregulated marketing words in the EU and the UK. No definition, no method and no verification sits behind any of them.
Watch for:
- Green flag: a described process, with the step, the temperature range and the filtration named.
- Red flag: “purified” as a bare word, or purification described as a substitute for testing.
- What it proves: gross insoluble material was probably removed.
- What it does not prove: that anything was measured afterwards.
Country of origin and altitude claims
Pure Himalayan shilajit is the phrase the market runs on, and a buyer cannot verify it. There is no origin certification scheme, no protected designation, and no isotope test a shop will run. An altitude figure on a jar is a claim about a collection site, and the seller is usually several intermediaries from the collector.
There is one legal handle. Under the general food information rules, country of origin must be declared where the words or pictures on the packaging would otherwise imply the food comes from somewhere else. A jar photographed against snow peaks and labelled Himalayan carries that implication, and the seller has to stand behind it.
So treat “pure himalayan shilajit” as a descriptor, not a specification, and ask a narrower question: which country, and can you show the supply documentation. Altai and Caucasus material is sold honestly under its own name. A 2025 analysis in ACS Omega characterised one native Himalayan specimen from Uttarkashi, and its authors were explicit that a single specimen is a reference point, not a description of the category.
The catch is that a truthful country of origin still tells you nothing about the purification, the batch or the testing. Origin is the check buyers weight most heavily and it deserves the least.
Watch for:
- Green flag: a named country of origin the seller will confirm in writing.
- Red flag: a precise altitude figure, “sourced at 5,000 metres”, or origin used as the main quality argument.
- What it proves: the seller knows and will state where the material came from.
- What it does not prove: purity, potency, batch identity or processing.

Five questions to send a seller
Copy these into an email. A seller that answers all five has told you more than any home test can. One that answers none has told you something too.
- Which batch would I receive, and can you send the certificate of analysis for that batch rather than a sample document?
- Which laboratory produced it, is it accredited to ISO/IEC 17025, and was the analysis within its accredited scope?
- Which analytes were tested, by which methods, at what limits of detection? Were mineral oil hydrocarbons included?
- If a fulvic acid percentage is on the label, which method produced it?
- Which country did the raw material come from?
What none of this establishes
These checks are about identity, labelling and documentation. They say nothing about what shilajit does in a body, and nothing here suggests an effect. The trial literature is small and short, and what it measured is set out in our article on what the evidence shows. A jar can pass all eight checks and still do nothing you were hoping for.
Nor does passing them make a product suitable for you. The resin is iron rich, so anyone with haemochromatosis or another iron overload condition should avoid it. It is not for use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and not for children. If you take prescribed medication or live with a diagnosed condition, speak to a doctor or pharmacist first. One more thing, because thousands of people a month in German search for a shilajit test winner. Stiftung Warentest has not tested shilajit: a search on test.de returned nothing when we checked on 4 September 2026. Any page presenting a Stiftung Warentest result for shilajit is describing something that does not exist.
What actually decides it
Three of the eight checks carry most of the weight, and they are not the ones the market talks about. The certificate of analysis and its scope tells you what was measured. The claims on the product page tell you whether the seller understands the rules it trades under. A willingness to answer a direct email tells you whether a real business stands behind it. The words purest shilajit and original shilajit decide nothing, and texture, taste and origin get more attention than they are worth.
Apply the same standard to us. Which shilajit is 100% pure?
No seller can honestly promise 100% purity, because no routine laboratory method measures it. What a seller can show is a certificate of analysis from a named laboratory listing which contaminants were looked for, by which method, and at what detection limit. Treat a bare purity percentage with no method beside it as a marketing number.
Is pure Shilajit hard or soft?
Both, depending on temperature. Shilajit resin is a viscous natural exudate, so it is firm and barely movable straight from a cold cupboard and slow and stringy after a few minutes in a warm hand. Consistency alone does not tell you whether a jar is genuine, because thickeners and caramelised sugar behave in much the same way.
Which brand Shilajit is genuine?
No European authority certifies shilajit brands, so nobody can name one for you. Judge a seller on documents instead: the mandatory particulars on the label, a certificate of analysis naming the laboratory and its accreditation, and a written answer to a direct question about origin and method.
Has Stiftung Warentest tested shilajit?
No. A search for Shilajit on test.de returns no test report, checked on 4 September 2026. Any page presenting a Stiftung Warentest winner for shilajit is describing a test that does not exist, which is itself a reason to distrust the rest of that page.
Where can I find real shilajit in Europe?

Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, children, anyone with haemochromatosis or another iron overload condition, and anyone taking prescribed medication or living with a diagnosed condition who has not spoken to a doctor or pharmacist first.
