Shilajit Side Effects, Contraindications and Who Should Avoid It
What shilajit side effects the published trials recorded, the six groups who should not take it, what not to combine it with, and what nobody has tested.

Shilajit side effects reported in published human studies are few and mild. The trials that monitored adverse events at 250 mg to 500 mg a day, for 28 days to 14 weeks, recorded no serious ones and no laboratory values outside normal limits. That is the honest answer to “is shilajit safe”, and it is also a thin answer, because those trials were small, short, and ran in healthy adults who were screened before enrolment.
Two things matter far more than the side-effect list. First, a specific set of people should not take shilajit at all, and the reason differs for each of them. Second, most documented harm in this category comes not from shilajit but from contaminated or adulterated product sold as shilajit. This page separates the two, names every exclusion group, and states what has never been measured.
What the safety evidence on shilajit actually consists of
Before the findings, the shape of the evidence. Six things decide whether a safety statement about shilajit means anything, and almost every page on this subject skips all six.
Trial size. The published human work runs from 25 participants to about 100. Studies of that size can detect a common side effect. They cannot detect a rare one, and a rare serious event is exactly what a safety question is about.
Trial duration. The longest human studies are 90 days and 14 weeks. Nothing longer has been published. Any statement about taking shilajit for a year is therefore an extrapolation, not a finding.
Who was enrolled. Healthy adults, screened. Pandit and colleagues (2016) enrolled men aged 45 to 55. Yadav and colleagues (2026) enrolled 25 healthy men aged 21 to 55. Das and colleagues (2019) enrolled middle-aged women. No trial has enrolled a pregnant woman, a child, or a person with liver or kidney disease.
What material was tested. A standardised extract and a resin are not the same substance. Composition varies by origin: an analysis of twelve samples from different regions found wide variation in calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese content between them. A safety result for one preparation does not transfer to another jar.
Who funded it. Several of the trials were run or funded by companies selling the ingredient tested. That does not make them wrong, but it is why a single positive safety report is not a conclusion.
What was never measured. No published trial has looked at interaction with prescribed medication, use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, use in children, or use for longer than fourteen weeks. Absence of a finding is not a finding of absence.

The side effects of shilajit reported in published trials
Across the human studies, adverse events were uncommon and none was serious. Reported complaints in the wider clinical literature and in practitioner reports are gastrointestinal: nausea, loose stools, an unsettled stomach, usually at higher servings or when taken on an empty stomach. The taste is bitter and mineral, and some people find that alone difficult.

One human case report is worth naming because it is the only published account of a serious event in which shilajit appears. Losa and colleagues (2019) described a 43 year old woman who developed urticaria after eating rice, tuna and shilajit, then went into anaphylaxis with loss of consciousness an hour after exercise. The authors diagnosed exercise-induced anaphylaxis with a probable underlying mast cell activation syndrome, and treated shilajit as a cofactor rather than the cause. Provocation testing was refused, so causation was never established. It is one case. It is also the reason the exclusion list below has a line about mast cell disorders.
Shilajit side effects for male users
No published trial has reported a side-effect profile specific to men. The male-only studies measured hormone panels and physical performance, not adverse events by sex. What the testosterone trials did and did not establish belongs in the men’s evidence page, not here.
Shilajit side effects for female users
Likewise, no trial has compared adverse events between men and women. The single trial in women reported none over 14 weeks. Iron status is the variable that actually matters, and that is covered below and in the women’s page.
Who should not take shilajit
This is the part every competing page leaves vague. Six groups, each with the mechanism and the class of evidence behind it. If you are in one of them, the answer is not “start low”. It is “do not start, and ask a clinician”.
Anyone with haemochromatosis or another iron-overload condition
This is the clearest contraindication there is. Shilajit is iron-bearing: elemental analyses consistently find iron among its measured constituents. In the 91 day rat study, iron was measured directly in organ tissue by atomic absorption spectroscopy, and liver iron was raised in the group given 5,000 mg/kg. If your body already stores too much iron, adding an iron-bearing supplement daily is the wrong direction. That includes hereditary haemochromatosis, transfusion-related iron overload, and anyone told to avoid iron supplements.
Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding
Not because harm has been shown, but because nothing has been measured. No published trial has enrolled a pregnant or breastfeeding participant. There is no toxicology package supporting use in pregnancy and no monitoring data. The honest position is the one a pharmacist would give: do not take it, and do not accept a page that tells you it is fine.
Children and adolescents
Same reason, same answer. Every human study has enrolled adults. There is no paediatric dose, no paediatric safety data, and no reason to guess at one.
Anyone taking prescribed medication
No interaction study has been published for shilajit and any medicine. That is not reassurance, it is a gap. Two mechanisms are documented well enough to act on. Shilajit carries calcium, magnesium and iron, and mineral load is the classic cause of reduced absorption of other drugs taken at the same time. Separately, the humic and fulvic fraction binds metal ions, which is the same chemistry that governs how minerals move across the gut wall. If you take anything on prescription, particularly thyroid medication, antibiotics, or an anticoagulant, ask a pharmacist before you start.
Anyone with a diagnosed thyroid condition
Two separate reasons, and this is a real question that almost nothing on the search results page answers. The first is practical: the NHS lists calcium and iron supplements, and indigestion remedies, among the things that do not work well alongside levothyroxine, because they interfere with its absorption. A mineral-rich resin taken with a morning thyroid tablet sits in exactly that category.
The second is a literature nobody in this category cites. Humic substances, the class of compounds shilajit is largely made of, have a documented goitrogenic history. Laurberg and colleagues (2003) reviewed the epidemiology of thyroid disease and drinking water and noted that humic substances from some sources, particularly coal and shale, have goitrogenic properties. Rat studies of humic acid in drinking water over 8 to 14 weeks found histological changes described as a precursor of goitre, and cell work has shown humic acid inhibiting thyroid hormone receptor binding.
None of that is a study of shilajit, and none of it establishes that a supplement serving does anything to a human thyroid. It is the reason the honest answer to “shilajit nebenwirkungen schilddrüse” is: the relevant chemistry has a goitrogen literature behind it, nobody has tested shilajit against it, and if you have a thyroid diagnosis you should not experiment on yourself.
Anyone with a mast cell disorder or a history of anaphylaxis
On the strength of the Losa case report above. One case is not a pattern, but where an underlying mast cell activation syndrome is known, the cost of avoiding shilajit is nothing and the cost of the alternative is not.
Gout and raised uric acid: what the record actually says
You will see gout listed as a shilajit contraindication. We looked for the evidence and could not find it. A search of the published literature returns a single paper mentioning shilajit and uric acid together, an animal cancer model in which uric acid was one of several renal markers tracked. There is no human study, no case report, and no mechanism specific to shilajit. We are not going to invent a caution to look thorough. If you have gout, the reason to ask a doctor is the general one: nobody has studied this in you.

The liver, arterial pressure and mood: the questions the search box asks
Three questions come up in every language on this subject, and the pages that rank tend to answer none of them with a source.
Does shilajit harm the liver? There is no published human case of liver injury attributed to purified shilajit. The rat study is the closest thing to direct evidence: at 500 and 2,500 mg/kg for 91 days, organ histology was reported as normal, with negligible changes in liver and intestine appearing only at 5,000 mg/kg, alongside raised liver iron at that dose. Human trials that ran liver function panels, including the 28 day resin study, reported values within normal limits. The liver damage that is documented in this category comes from lead-contaminated Ayurvedic products, which is a different problem with a different cause.
Does shilajit affect arterial pressure? No trial has been designed to answer that. The nearest recent work is a 12 week randomised trial at Texas A&M in 109 completers with metabolic syndrome risk factors, which measured pulse wave velocity and flow-mediated dilation. Shilajit was in it at 6 mg or 12 mg a day, inside a blend with chromium and Phyllanthus emblica, which is between one fortieth and one eightieth of a typical resin serving. It tells you nothing about shilajit at 500 mg. If you take medication for hypertension, that is a conversation with your doctor, not with a supplement page.
Does shilajit affect mood? The only mechanistic work worth naming is Bhattarai and colleagues (2016), who applied shilajit to preoptic hypothalamic neurons from juvenile mice and found it activated strychnine-sensitive glycine receptors. That is a finding about mouse brain slices in a dish. It is not a finding about how anyone feels, and it should not be reported as one.
What not to combine shilajit with

Iron supplements. Do not stack an iron-bearing resin on top of prescribed or self-selected iron unless a doctor has told you to take both.
Thyroid medication. Keep them well apart in the day, on the same logic the NHS applies to calcium and iron alongside levothyroxine, and confirm the timing with your pharmacist rather than with us.
Anything else on prescription. No interaction trial exists. A pharmacist can check your specific list in two minutes.
Other supplements. Shilajit is routinely sold stacked with ashwagandha and with medicinal mushrooms, and no combination has been tested for safety as a combination. Ashwagandha in particular has its own European regulatory history, covered on its own page.
Alcohol. Untested. There is nothing to report, which is itself the report.
Purified shilajit and adulterated shilajit are two different risks
This is the distinction that changes the answer, and it is where the real-world danger sits.
Raw material from rock can carry lead, arsenic, mercury and cadmium. Aldakheel and colleagues (2022) analysed Indian and Pakistani shilajit by three independent methods and found several elements, including lead, arsenic and mercury, above standard permissible limits in the samples tested. Kamgar and colleagues (2025) measured thallium in 13 crude samples from Iran, India, Nepal, Russia and Kyrgyzstan and in six commercial supplements, and found concentrations in some finished supplements higher than in the crude material they came from, which points at the processing step rather than the mountain.
So the question “is shilajit safe” splits in two. Purified, tested shilajit at a documented serving has a thin but unalarming safety record. Untested material bought on the strength of a photograph has no safety record at all, and the published contamination data is the reason. One regulatory fact belongs here, because it explains why the market looks the way it does. Under Article 4 of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, the European Commission’s consultation on mumijo, the European name for the same substance, concluded that it is not novel when used as or in food supplements, but is novel when used as or in foods other than food supplements. Germany requested the determination; Czechia stated that mumijo was used there in food supplements before 15 May 1997. A food supplement is not a medicine, is not assessed for efficacy before sale, and carries no authorised health claim for shilajit anywhere in the EU. Anyone telling you otherwise is telling you something the regulator has not.
What is not known
Plainly, and without softening. Nobody has published a human study of shilajit longer than 14 weeks. Nobody has studied it in pregnancy, in breastfeeding, in children, in liver or kidney disease, or alongside any prescribed medicine. Nobody has established a no-observed-adverse-effect level in humans. The composition of the material varies by origin, so a safety result for one preparation is not a safety result for another. Several of the existing trials were funded by parties with a commercial interest in the outcome.

Deciding whether to take it
Three things decide this, and none of them is the length of a side-effect list. Are you in one of the six excluded groups, in which case stop. Do you take prescribed medication, in which case the next step is a pharmacist rather than a purchase. And can the specific jar you are considering show you what is in it, because that is where the documented harm in this category has come from, every time.

Is shilajit safe to take daily?
The longest published human studies ran for 90 days at 250 mg twice daily and for 14 weeks at 125 mg or 250 mg twice daily, and reported no serious adverse events. Nobody has published a human study running longer than that, so daily use beyond about three months has not been measured either way. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before making it a daily habit, particularly if you take prescribed medication.
Who should avoid taking shilajit?
Anyone with haemochromatosis or another iron-overload condition, anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding, children and adolescents, anyone taking prescribed medication without checking with a pharmacist first, and anyone with a diagnosed thyroid condition. Add to that anyone with mast cell activation syndrome, following a published case report of exercise-induced anaphylaxis in which shilajit was one of the ingested cofactors.
What should you avoid while taking shilajit?
Iron supplements, unless a doctor has told you to take both. Keep it well away from levothyroxine, which the NHS says does not work well alongside calcium and iron supplements or indigestion remedies. Alcohol has not been studied with shilajit at all, and neither has any other supplement it is commonly stacked with.
Does shilajit affect the liver?
There is no published human case of liver injury attributed to purified shilajit. A 91 day study in rats found near-normal liver histology up to 2,500 mg/kg, with negligible changes and raised liver iron only at 5,000 mg/kg. The documented liver harm in this category comes from lead-contaminated Ayurvedic products, not from shilajit that has been purified and tested.
What do doctors say about shilajit?
There is no professional consensus statement to quote, so the useful answer is what the record supports. The human evidence is a handful of small trials of 28 days to 14 weeks, several run or funded by ingredient suppliers. A food supplement is not assessed before sale the way a medicine is, so the jar itself is the variable. And no interaction study exists, which is why anyone on prescribed medication should ask a pharmacist before starting.
Are shilajit side effects different for women?
No published trial has compared adverse events between men and women. The one study in women, a 14 week trial in middle-aged women at 125 mg or 250 mg twice daily, reported no adverse effects during that period. Iron status matters more than sex here, and pregnancy and breastfeeding are exclusions because nobody has tested them, not because harm has been shown.
