How Long Shilajit Takes to Work, According to the Trials

No shilajit trial reports an outcome before week eight. Here is what each study measured, on which day it measured it, and how to run your own trial.

Nobody has measured how long shilajit takes to work. Every published human trial dosed its participants for at least eight weeks and reported its first outcome at the end of that period or later, so the literature is silent on day three, week one and month one, which is exactly when people ask. The pages that give you a week by week timeline are not reporting evidence. They are filling a gap.

That leaves a more useful question, and this page answers it: what did each trial measure, on which day did it measure, and what can you sensibly conclude from your own jar? Below is every human study we could verify, mapped to its actual measurement schedule, plus a method for running a personal trial that will not lie to you.

How to read any claim about how long shilajit takes to work

Every timeline you find online is built from the same handful of studies. What separates an honest reading from an invented one is which details get carried across. These are the six we check before we repeat anything, and they are the six that collapse most of the timelines in circulation.

First measured timepoint. The earliest day on which the study actually took a reading. This is the only number that can support a statement about onset, and it is the number that never appears in a shop’s timeline graphic. If the first reading is at week eight, the study is silent about week one, no matter what it found.

Interim measurements. Whether anything was recorded between baseline and the end. A trial with only a before and an after tells you the difference across the whole period and nothing about its shape. It cannot distinguish a change that appeared in week two from one that appeared in week seven.

Dose and form. Trials used standardised extracts at fixed milligram doses, usually a purified extract in capsule form. Population. Recreationally trained men in their early twenties, men aged 45 to 55, postmenopausal women with osteopenia. These are three different sets of people, and a finding in one is not a forecast for another.

What was measured, and by whom. Serum markers, bone density scans and gene expression from a biopsy are laboratory readings. None of the trials measured how anyone felt. That gap is the whole reason the internet timelines exist: the outcome readers care about, a felt change, has never been the outcome a shilajit trial recorded.

Funding and product identity. Several of the strength and collagen trials used one named commercial extract, and one of the muscle transcriptome papers lists an author employed by an ingredient manufacturer. That does not invalidate a result. It does mean the finding belongs to a specific branded preparation rather than to shilajit in general.

Pandit and colleagues ran a randomised, double blind, placebo controlled study in healthy volunteers aged 45 to 55, dosing 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day for 90 consecutive days, and reported higher total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS against placebo at the end of that period, with gonadotropic hormones maintained. It is one small trial in one narrow age band. It says nothing about anyone younger, nothing about women, and nothing at all about day 45. When Morgado and colleagues reviewed 52 studies of 27 marketed testosterone ingredients in 2024, they rated purified shilajit extract as possibly effective in men with late onset hypogonadism, and that rating rests on this one trial with its one endpoint at day 90. A possibly, from a single reading taken three months in, is the strongest statement the testosterone literature supports. The population specific detail sits in our page on shilajit for men.

Keller and colleagues gave 250 mg or 500 mg a day of a named commercial shilajit extract to 63 recreationally active men for eight weeks, then repeated a fatiguing leg extension protocol and blood draw. The pre supplementation testing and the post supplementation testing are the only two datapoints in the study. Neltner and colleagues did the same shape of thing at 500 mg and 1000 mg in 35 men, measuring a serum collagen synthesis marker before and after eight weeks, and reported increases in both dosed groups but not in placebo.

The single longest study is the one that matters most to this question. Pingali and Nutalapati randomised 60 postmenopausal women aged 45 to 65 with osteopenia to placebo, 250 mg or 500 mg of a standardised shilajit extract daily for 48 weeks. Bone mineral density was scanned at weeks 0, 24 and 48. Circulating markers were drawn at weeks 0, 12, 24 and 48. That week 12 blood draw is, as far as we can find, the earliest reading reported in any placebo controlled human shilajit trial, and it is a marker in a tube, not a sensation.

What to do with this section: if someone quotes you a number of days, ask which study it came from and which day that study took its reading. In every case we have checked, the answer is that the number was not measured.

Why nobody can tell you what happens on day three

There is a specific reason the first three days are the loudest part of the conversation online and the emptiest part of the evidence. Trials are designed around the outcome they are funded to detect, and detecting a change in serum testosterone or bone density takes months. Nobody sets up a placebo controlled trial to ask whether people feel different on Wednesday, because that outcome is expensive to measure well and almost impossible to blind convincingly.

So the day three reports circulating on social media and in shop blogs are unblinded self reports from people who have just spent money on a jar. That is not a reason to dismiss them, but it is a reason not to build a timeline on them. Expectation, a new routine, better sleep in the same week, a change in caffeine, and the ordinary week to week drift of energy all sit inside that window, and none of them are separable without a control.

There is one recent trial that took a genuine mid point reading, and it illustrates the problem from the other side. Martinez and colleagues (2025) ran a 12 week randomised trial in sedentary adults with metabolic risk factors, measuring at baseline, week 6 and week 12. It is the only shilajit containing trial we found with a real interim timepoint, and the shilajit content was 6 mg to 12 mg per day inside a chromium and Phyllanthus emblica combination. At that dose, in that blend, it tells you nothing about a shilajit timeline.

What to do with this section: treat any felt change in the first fortnight as unverified, including your own. Write it down, keep going, and see whether it survives.

When to take shilajit: morning or evening

There is no evidence on time of day. No trial has compared a morning dose against an evening dose, and none of the published protocols even report the clock times at which participants dosed. What the protocols do tell you is the split: Pandit dosed twice a day, Das dosed twice a day, Keller and Neltner dosed once daily. Twice daily dosing was used in the two longest running designs, which is a schedule, not a recommendation.

The practical consequence is smaller than the search volume suggests. If you want to know whether shilajit does anything for you, the clock time you pick matters far less than picking one and not moving it. A dose that lands at 07:00 on weekdays and 11:30 at weekends adds a variable to a test that already has too many.

Two things are worth knowing before you choose. Resin is bitter and mineral, and most people dissolve it in warm water rather than take it neat, which for some readers rules out a last thing at night dose on taste alone. Does shilajit make you tired?

This question appears in the German People Also Ask box, and it deserves a straight answer: nobody knows, because nobody has measured it. No human shilajit trial has recorded sleepiness, sedation, alertness or sleep quality as an outcome. There is no published dataset to consult.

What exists is one laboratory paper. Bhattarai and colleagues (2016) applied shilajit to preoptic hypothalamic neurons from juvenile mice and reported inward currents that were blocked by strychnine, which they interpreted as activity at glycine receptors. Glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, which is presumably why this paper gets cited in the drowsiness conversation. It is a recording from mouse brain slices. It is not evidence about how a person feels after a capsule, and treating it as such is the kind of leap this page exists to refuse.

How to run a personal trial that will not fool you

This is the part the evidence can actually support, because it is a method rather than a promise. If you are going to spend money on a jar, spend it in a way that produces an answer.

Run it for at least eight weeks. That is the shortest period over which any published trial reported an outcome. Deciding at day ten that it works, or that it does not, is a decision made inside the window where the literature has nothing to say.

Change one thing. Start shilajit in a week where you are not also starting a new training block, a new sleep schedule, creatine, or a holiday. Anything else you begin in the same fortnight becomes a permanent confound in your own data.

Fix the dose, the form and the time. Same amount, same product, same hour. If you change format halfway through, you have started a second trial and abandoned the first.

Write down three things, weekly, on the same day. Pick them before you start, and make them things you can score out of ten without thinking hard: for example sleep quality, perceived training recovery, and afternoon energy. Three is enough. Twelve is a diary nobody keeps past week two.

Set your stop rule in advance. Decide now what result would make you stop buying it. “No change in any of my three scores across eight weeks” is a clean rule. Without one written down before you start, the sunk cost of the jar makes the answer yes every time.

Expect to be your own placebo group. You have none. This is the permanent limitation of a personal trial and no amount of care removes it, which is why a modest effect you are not certain about should be read as no effect.

How long to keep taking it, and whether to cycle

Readers across five languages ask the same second question: for how long should this continue. The evidence sets a floor and a ceiling and nothing in between. The floor is eight weeks, the shortest trial duration. The ceiling is 48 weeks, the longest, in postmenopausal women with osteopenia, where the study reported its supplementation was carried out over that full period. Beyond a year, there is no published human data at all.

On cycling, five days on and two days off, three months on and one month off, or any other schedule: there is nothing. No trial has compared continuous dosing with an interrupted schedule. Every cycling protocol you will read is a preference presented as a protocol, and it is worth naming that plainly, because cycling advice is usually delivered with more confidence than any actual finding in this field.

The regulatory position is worth understanding too. Under EU rules, only health claims authorised and listed in the EU Register may be made on a food, and claims for botanical substances were held back into a separate procedure that has not concluded. Shilajit carries no authorised claim. That is why an honest European page describes trials rather than promising outcomes, and why any site telling you what shilajit will do for you by week four is either not selling into Europe or not paying attention.

What is not known, and who should not take it

The limits here are wide, and it is better to see them before you buy than after.

No trial has measured onset. No trial has measured a felt effect of any kind. No trial has compared morning with evening dosing, resin with capsules, or continuous use with cycling. The largest trial recruited 63 participants. Several used one named commercial extract, so their findings belong to that preparation. The literature described on this page is a handful of small studies across three unrelated populations, and the honest summary of it is that shilajit has been studied enough to be interesting and nowhere near enough to be predictable.

Some people should not be running this experiment at all. Do not take shilajit during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Do not give it to children. Avoid it if you have haemochromatosis or any other iron overload condition, because the resin is iron rich. If you take prescribed medication of any kind, speak to a doctor or pharmacist before you start, and do the same if you have a diagnosed condition. None of these are formalities. A supplement is not a medicine and it does not come with the interaction checking that a medicine does.

The decision this actually comes down to

The question people type is how long does it take for shilajit to work, and underneath it, when will I feel something. The question the evidence can answer is how long a fair test takes, and the answer to that is eight to twelve weeks of consistent dosing with a written record and a stop rule agreed in advance. Everything else on this subject, every graphic promising subtle changes by day seven and noticeable ones by day thirty, is invented. It is invented by people selling the same product we sell, which is why we would rather you hear it from us.

Two things decide whether that eight week test is worth running. The first is whether the product is what it says it is, which is a purity and testing question rather than a timing one. The second is whether you can keep a routine for two months, honestly, because a test you abandon in week three costs the same as one you finish. How long does shilajit take to work?

No published trial has measured that. The human studies dosed participants for eight weeks to forty eight weeks, and the earliest outcome any of them reports is at week eight. Nothing in the literature describes what happens on day three, day seven or day thirty, because no trial sampled that early.

Is shilajit good before bed?

No trial has compared a morning dose with an evening dose, so there is no evidence either way. Trials dosed either once daily or twice daily at unspecified clock times. If you are testing it on yourself, pick one time and keep it fixed, because a moving schedule makes your own observations useless.

What happens if I take shilajit daily?

Daily dosing is what every trial did, at 250 mg to 1000 mg a day for eight weeks or longer. Those trials reported the doses were tolerated over their study periods, in the specific populations they recruited. That is a statement about those participants, not a safety guarantee for you, and long term daily use has not been studied beyond forty eight weeks.

Does shilajit make you tired?

No human trial has measured sleepiness, sedation or alertness after taking shilajit, so there is no published answer. A 2016 electrophysiology paper reported that shilajit activated glycine receptors on hypothalamic neurons in mice, which is a laboratory observation in rodent tissue and says nothing about how a person feels. How long should you take shilajit for?

There is no established duration. The shortest trials ran eight weeks and the longest ran forty eight weeks. Nothing has been published on cycling, on breaks, or on what happens after a year, so any cycling schedule you read is somebody's preference rather than a finding.

No study establishes a timeline. What is shilajit, actually?

A dark resin that seeps out of rock at altitude in the Himalaya, made of plant matter pressed and broken down over a very long time. What comes off the rock is not the product. Shodhana, the purification step, is what separates the resin from everything it was sitting in, and that is the step worth asking a seller about.

Why does fulvic acid matter?

Fulvic acid is a carrier molecule. It binds trace minerals and is studied as a way of getting them across a cell membrane, which is why the interesting question about a mineral is not how much is in the jar but how much of it arrives. That is the mechanism the research is built on. It is a line of study, not a settled fact, and nobody should sell it to you as one.

How much do I take, and when would I notice anything?

A rice-grain portion, dissolved in warm water or under the tongue, once a day. A 30g jar lasts two to three months at that dose. Shilajit is not a stimulant and nothing here works like one, so the honest unit of time is a month rather than an afternoon. If you want the caffeine experience this will disappoint you.

Resin or capsules?

Resin is the whole-spectrum mineral load and it tastes like it does. Capsules are 500mg split evenly between a standardised active and purified resin, in a vegan HPMC shell with no rice flour, no magnesium stearate and no bulking agent. Six blends, each built on the same resin. One caution: the Sea Moss and Bladderwrack blend is naturally high in iodine, so if you have Hashimoto’s or any diagnosed thyroid condition, take that one to your doctor rather than to the checkout.

Where does it come from, and how do I know it is clean?

Collected at altitude in Nepal and purified in a GMP-certified facility. Rock carries whatever the rock carried, which in the Himalaya can mean lead, arsenic and mercury, so every batch is tested for heavy metals by a third-party laboratory and a certificate of analysis is held for the batch you receive. A jar that cannot show you what came out the other side is asking you to take that on faith.
