Shilajit Resin, Capsules, Liquid, Powder and Gummies Compared

Five shilajit formats compared on active load, taste, dosing and cost per gram. No trial compares absorption between forms, so here is what decides it.

Shilajit resin and shilajit capsules contain the same raw material and there is no published trial comparing how well either one is absorbed. What the format changes is the quantity you actually take, how precisely you know that quantity, and whether you are still taking it in month three. Resin gives you the highest proportion of shilajit per gram and the least precision. Capsules and tablets give you a fixed quantity and no taste. Liquid, powder and gummies sit between those two on convenience and below both on verifiability.

That is not the answer the rest of this search result gives you. Below, all five formats are described on an identical set of six points, including one almost nobody publishes: what each format hides from you on the label. Then the side by side tables, what the published trials actually used, and who should not take any of it.

How we compared the five formats

Every comparison page on this subject ranks formats by absorption. None of them can, because the trial that would settle it does not exist. We compared on things that are visible, checkable and decided before you swallow anything.

Active load per serving. How much shilajit is in one unit of the format: one scoop, one capsule, one dropper, one gummy. This is the number that connects a product to a published dose, and it is the number most labels are vaguest about.

Dosing precision. How large the step is between one serving and the next, and how much of that step is under your control. A capsule has a step size fixed by the manufacturer. A resin scoop has a step size fixed by your eye and a warm spoon.

What the published trials used. Where a format has actually been studied in humans, we say so, with the dose, the duration, the population and the design. Where it has not, we say that instead.

Taste and the abandonment risk. Shilajit is bitter, smoky and mineral. The usual reason a jar goes unfinished is not that it stopped working, it is that the person stopped opening it. A format you tolerate at week twelve beats one you abandon at week two, and this is the only place where format has an obvious effect on outcome.

Cost per gram of shilajit. Not the shelf price. The proportion of what you buy that is the substance you came for, rather than carrier, shell, sugar or water.

What it hides. Every format conceals something structural. Resin hides the dose. Capsules hide the extraction ratio. Liquids hide the concentration. Powders hide whether they were dried or carried. Gummies hide the sugar. This is the field we would read first.

Resin

Resin is shilajit in its purified native state: a dense, glossy, near-black material with the consistency of cold treacle, sold in a jar and taken on a spoon or dissolved in warm liquid. It is the reference form, and listings that read resin shilajit rather than shilajit resin are the same thing in a different word order. When the European Commission’s novel food status entry describes mumijo, the Russian and German name for the same substance, it describes exactly this: a dark brown resinous product characterised by humic and fulvic acids, dibenzo-alpha-pyrones and minerals.

What it means for you. The whole jar is the active, so a 30g jar holds 30g of shilajit and nothing else. At the 500mg daily total used in the published trials, that is 60 servings. Nothing has been dried, milled, standardised or blended, which is why many long-term users stay with it.

The catch. You are estimating the dose by eye every single morning, the taste is the strongest of any format, and in a cold flat the resin is stiff enough to need a warm spoon before it will move at all.

Watch for:

  • Active load per serving: the highest possible, because the jar is 100 per cent shilajit. What you actually take is whatever you scooped.
  • Taste: bitter, smoky and mineral, undiluted. This is the format people describe when they say they could not get used to it.
  • Dosing precision: the lowest of the five. A pea-sized scoop is not a unit of measurement.
  • Travel and storage: poor. It softens in heat, stiffens in cold, and a jar of black resin in hand luggage is a conversation you do not want.
  • Cost per gram of resin equivalent: the lowest of the five, because none of what you buy is carrier.
  • What it hides: the dose. It also hides its own water content, which is why two honest jars of the same weight are not always the same amount of dry material.

Capsules and tablets

A capsule holds a measured quantity of dried, standardised shilajit extract inside a gelatine or plant-based shell. Shilajit tablets are the same powder compressed with binders instead. In Poland, Russia and Czechia this is the traditional retail form, sold under the older name, which is why mumijo tablets outsell resin across much of central and eastern Europe.

What it means for you. This is the format the placebo-controlled evidence was actually built on. Keller and colleagues (2019), publishing in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, gave 63 recreationally active men aged around 21 a standardised shilajit extract in capsule form at 250mg or 500mg daily for eight weeks against placebo, and reported a smaller fatigue-induced decline in isometric strength in the 500mg group among the stronger half of the sample. Our own capsule blends are 250mg of a named second active plus 250mg of shilajit extract per capsule, so a 60-capsule pot contains 15g of extract.

The catch. Half the fill in a paired blend is not shilajit, and a label that gives you one total milligram figure is not telling you how the total splits.

Watch for:

  • Active load per serving: fixed and printed. Ours is 250mg of shilajit extract per capsule, alongside 250mg of the second active.
  • Taste: none. The shell does the whole job, which is the entire reason this format exists.
  • Dosing precision: the highest of the five. The step size is one capsule and you cannot get it wrong.
  • Travel and storage: the best of the five. Room temperature, no leaks, no spoon.
  • Cost per gram of resin equivalent: higher than resin. You are paying for the shell, the filling run, and in a blend for the second ingredient too.
  • What it hides: the extraction ratio. “250mg of extract” does not tell you how much raw material that extract came from, and no European label is obliged to.

Liquid dropper

A liquid is shilajit dissolved or suspended in a carrier, usually water and glycerine, and dispensed by pipette. It is the newest of the five formats in European retail and the one whose labelling conventions are least settled.

What it means for you. The step size is a drop rather than a capsule, which genuinely helps if you want to start below a full serving and build up. It also mixes into coffee, tea or water without the stirring that resin needs.

The catch. A drop is not a unit. Drop size varies with the pipette, the viscosity and how hard you squeeze, so a bottle that states its content per drop rather than per millilitre has given you a number you cannot reproduce.

Watch for:

  • Active load per serving: stated per millilitre on a good label, per dropper on a poor one. Check which before you buy.
  • Taste: diluted but present. Weaker than resin, stronger than a capsule, and it lingers in whatever you mixed it into.
  • Dosing precision: moderate. Fine steps, but only as reliable as the pipette.
  • Travel and storage: good, with the standard liquid caveat about cabin baggage limits and a cap that has to be tight.
  • Cost per gram of resin equivalent: high. Most of the bottle by mass is carrier.
  • What it hides: the concentration. Two 50ml bottles at the same price can differ several-fold in shilajit content and neither label has to make that comparison easy.

Powder

Powder is shilajit that has been dried and milled, either directly from purified resin or as a spray-dried extract carried on a bulking agent such as maltodextrin. Both are sold as shilajit pulver in German-speaking markets and the packaging rarely distinguishes them.

What it means for you. It dissolves faster than resin and can be measured on a jeweller’s scale to the tenth of a gram, which makes it the only format other than capsules where you can reproduce a trial dose exactly.

The catch. If it is a carried extract, a meaningful share of the tub is the carrier, and nothing on the front of the pack tells you which of the two things you bought.

Watch for:

  • Active load per serving: depends entirely on whether it is dried resin or a carried extract. Dried resin is close to resin; a carried extract can be a fraction of it.
  • Taste: bitter and dusty. Slightly easier than resin because it disperses, and worse than resin if you inhale it.
  • Dosing precision: high with a scale, low with the enclosed scoop. Scoops are calibrated by volume and powders vary in density.
  • Travel and storage: good, provided it is kept dry. It cakes in humidity and is then unmeasurable.
  • Cost per gram of resin equivalent: low if it is dried resin, high if it is carried. The same shelf price can mean either.
  • What it hides: whether it is dried or carried. This is the single least transparent point in the whole category.

Gummies

A gummy is a pectin or gelatine sweet with shilajit extract worked into the mix. It is by a wide margin the highest-volume search in this whole set: 5,400 searches a month in the United Kingdom for shilajit gummies against 2,400 for shilajit resin, and the queries that follow it are mostly brand names and shilajit gummies reviews rather than shilajit gummies benefits. We do not sell them.

What it means for you. It is the easiest format in the world to take daily. No taste barrier, no spoon, no scale. If adherence is your actual problem, this format solves it.

The catch. The shilajit load is capped by how much bitterness a sweet can mask, and gummy manufacturing has a poor record on label accuracy. Cohen and colleagues, publishing in JAMA in 2023, analysed 25 melatonin gummy products and found 22 of them inaccurately labelled, with actual content ranging from 74 per cent to 347 per cent of the labelled amount and one product containing no detectable melatonin at all. That study was a different active in a different market and it does not tell you what is in a shilajit gummy. It tells you the gummy matrix is hard to dose accurately, which is a manufacturing fact rather than an accusation.

Watch for:

  • Active load per serving: the lowest of the five, and stated per gummy on an honest pack and per bottle on a misleading one.
  • Taste: sweet. Most of what you taste is sugar or a sugar alcohol, which is doing the work of hiding the rest.
  • Dosing precision: fixed per gummy, which is precise only if the printed figure is right.
  • Travel and storage: good, until they are warm, at which point they fuse into one block.
  • Cost per gram of resin equivalent: the highest of the five by a distance. Sugar, gelling agent and coating are most of the mass you are paying to ship.
  • What it hides: the sugar and the recipe constraint. The active load was set by what the sweet could carry, not by what a trial used.

Which form of shilajit is most effective?

No format has been shown to be more effective than another, because the trial that would show it has never been run. Anyone who tells you resin absorbs better, or that a capsule has to survive stomach acid first, is describing a mechanism they find plausible rather than a result somebody measured. Searches for shilajit resin benefits return dozens of pages asserting a ranking, and not one of them cites a comparison.

What is worth knowing is which formats the published human work actually used, because it is the reverse of what the category assumes. The two shilajit trials most often quoted both used a standardised extract in capsule form: Keller and colleagues (2019) at 250mg or 500mg daily for eight weeks against placebo in 63 men, and Pandit and colleagues (2016) in Andrologia at 250mg twice daily for 90 days in men aged 45 to 55, against placebo. The evidence base for shilajit, such as it is, is largely a capsule evidence base.

Resin has one published human study and it is much weaker. Yadav and colleagues (2026), in Cureus, gave 500mg of shilajit resin daily as 250mg twice daily to 25 healthy men aged 21 to 55 for 28 days and reported within-group changes in leg press strength and fatigue scores. The authors state plainly that the open-label, single-arm design without a placebo control limits causal interpretation, and they call for randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. That is an honest paper describing a pilot, and it is not evidence that resin outperforms anything.

So the format question is not an efficacy question. It is an adherence question: which of these will you still be taking in twelve weeks, at a dose you can name. What is not known, and who should not take any of it

No format has an authorised health claim in the European Union, the United Kingdom or Switzerland. Under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006 an unauthorised health claim on a food supplement is an offence whether or not it happens to be true, so any page telling you what a shilajit gummy does to your body is either breaking that rule or describing something nobody measured.

The regulatory position is narrower than most listings suggest. The European Commission’s novel food status entry for mumijo records that the product is not novel only when used as or in food supplements, and that it is novel when used as or in foods other than food supplements. The entry is a non-binding orientation tool, not a licence, and member states can set their own restrictions. Practically, that line is why a shilajit gummy sold as a food supplement sits in a different position from one sold as a confectionery, and it is worth checking which one you are being sold.

Labels are also not a guarantee of contents. Vanhee and colleagues (2025), in Molecules, tested 50 melatonin supplements from European online commerce and found label accuracy ranging from 71 per cent to 182 per cent in products from legal supply chains, with three of those 25 breaching current legislation. Melatonin is not shilajit and the finding does not transfer, but it is a European result about European online supplement labelling, and it is why we treat a printed milligram figure as a claim rather than a measurement.

Do not take shilajit in any format if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not give it to children. If you have haemochromatosis or any other iron-overload condition, avoid it: the material is iron-bearing. If you take prescribed medication or have a diagnosed condition, speak to a doctor or pharmacist before you start, and do that before you compare formats rather than after. How to actually decide

Three things decide this, and absorption is not one of them. First, can you name the dose you took this morning without guessing. Second, will you take it again on a Tuesday in November when you feel nothing in particular. Third, what proportion of what you paid for is actually shilajit. Resin wins the third comfortably and loses the first. Capsules win the first and second and lose the third. Liquid, powder and gummies each trade one of those for convenience, and gummies trade the most.

If you want the material itself and you are willing to keep a jar and a warm spoon in the kitchen, start with shilajit resin in the smallest jar, because 30g is enough to find out whether you can live with the taste before you commit to more. If you already know the taste will end the experiment, take the capsule route and choose the second active on its own merits, because that decision matters more than the shell around it. Either way, run it for twelve weeks at a dose you can write down, and read how to take shilajit before your first serving.

Questions

Which form of shilajit is most effective?

No published trial has compared shilajit formats against each other, so no format can be called the most effective. What the formats change is the amount you actually swallow and how reliably you know that amount. Resin and capsules both let you get to the 250mg twice daily or 500mg daily used in the published trials; gummies generally do not.

Is shilajit better in capsules or liquid form?

Neither has been shown to be better, because no trial has compared them. Capsules give you a fixed quantity per unit and no taste. A liquid dropper gives you a smaller step size, which is useful if you are starting low, but only if the bottle states the shilajit content per millilitre rather than per unnamed drop.

Is shilajit resin the same as shilajit?

What is shilajit, actually?

A dark resin that seeps out of rock at altitude in the Himalaya, made of plant matter pressed and broken down over a very long time. What comes off the rock is not the product. Shodhana, the purification step, is what separates the resin from everything it was sitting in, and that is the step worth asking a seller about.

Why does fulvic acid matter?

Fulvic acid is a carrier molecule. It binds trace minerals and is studied as a way of getting them across a cell membrane, which is why the interesting question about a mineral is not how much is in the jar but how much of it arrives. That is the mechanism the research is built on. It is a line of study, not a settled fact, and nobody should sell it to you as one.

How much do I take, and when would I notice anything?

A rice-grain portion, dissolved in warm water or under the tongue, once a day. A 30g jar lasts two to three months at that dose. Shilajit is not a stimulant and nothing here works like one, so the honest unit of time is a month rather than an afternoon. If you want the caffeine experience this will disappoint you.

Resin or capsules?

Resin is the whole-spectrum mineral load and it tastes like it does. Capsules are 500mg split evenly between a standardised active and purified resin, in a vegan HPMC shell with no rice flour, no magnesium stearate and no bulking agent. Six blends, each built on the same resin. One caution: the Sea Moss and Bladderwrack blend is naturally high in iodine, so if you have Hashimoto’s or any diagnosed thyroid condition, take that one to your doctor rather than to the checkout.

Where does it come from, and how do I know it is clean?

Collected at altitude in Nepal and purified in a GMP-certified facility. Rock carries whatever the rock carried, which in the Himalaya can mean lead, arsenic and mercury, so every batch is tested for heavy metals by a third-party laboratory and a certificate of analysis is held for the batch you receive. A jar that cannot show you what came out the other side is asking you to take that on faith.

Do you ship outside Europe?

The launch markets are the EU, the UK and Switzerland. Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland get shipping rates without a localised site. Rates and delivery times go up once fulfilment confirms them.
