How to Take Shilajit
How much shilajit to take, when, and what to dissolve it in, with the doses the trials used. A first month, honestly, and who should not take the resin.

Take a portion of purified shilajit resin between the size of a grain of rice and a small pea, which is roughly 250 mg to 500 mg, dissolve it in warm water or milk, and drink it once a day at the same time each day, usually in the morning. Give it a month before drawing any conclusion. That is the whole method, and it is the same one the published trials used, give or take a spoon.
Resin does not come with a dosing cup and a printed number, and that is the first thing people find difficult about it. This is the practical article: how much, when, in what, what a sensible first month looks like, and who should not be taking it at all. For what shilajit is, start with the definition. The dose, taken from the trials rather than the marketing
Almost every shilajit page on the internet says “300 to 500 mg” and cites nothing. Here is where the numbers actually come from.

Pandit and colleagues gave 250 mg of purified shilajit twice a day for 90 consecutive days in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Keller and colleagues gave 250 mg or 500 mg once daily for eight weeks and found that only the 500 mg arm separated from placebo, and only in the upper half of the sample by baseline strength. Pingali and Nutalapati gave 250 mg or 500 mg of a standardised aqueous extract once daily for 48 weeks, the longest exposure in the literature, and found that both doses differed from placebo on bone density, with the higher dose doing more.
Three things to take from that table. The daily range is 250 mg to 500 mg, with one later trial going to 1,000 mg. The lower dose sometimes did nothing, which is a reason to start at the low end for tolerance and not to expect the low end to be equivalent. And every one of those trials used a purified, standardised preparation, several of them one branded extract, so the milligram figures apply to purified material and not to whatever came off the rock.
Turning milligrams into a spoon
Purified resin is dosed by eye. A portion the size of a grain of rice is on the order of 100 mg to 200 mg; a small pea is on the order of 500 mg. That equivalence is a trade convention, not a laboratory measurement, and it depends on the density and moisture of the batch: our supplier’s certificate reports 14.3 per cent moisture for the resin we sell, and a wetter resin weighs more per portion than a drier one. If you want to know exactly, a jeweller’s scale that reads to 0.01 g costs less than a jar of resin and settles the question in a minute. Weigh a portion once, learn what 300 mg looks like on the back of your spoon, and eyeball it from then on.
Where the label on your jar states a serving, the label wins. It was written for that batch, and it is the number the seller is accountable for.
Liquid drops and capsules
A liquid dropper is the same resin dissolved to a stated concentration, so the dose is the number of drops on the label rather than a spoon. Capsules are dried extract, usually blended with other ingredients, and the label states the milligrams of shilajit per capsule. In both cases you lose the taste and the guesswork and gain a measured dose, at the cost of more processing between rock and mouth. The trade-offs are the subject of resin against capsules.
The method, step by step
- Soften the jar if it is cold. Resin is stiff below room temperature. Stand the closed jar in a bowl of warm tap water for a few minutes, or simply keep it somewhere warm. Do not microwave it.
- Take the portion. Use a clean, dry spoon or the small spatula many jars come with. Scrape a portion between a rice grain and a small pea onto the tip. Close the jar.
- Dissolve it. Stir the portion into roughly 200 ml of warm water, comfortably below boiling, until it disperses. Purified resin dissolves completely in about a minute, leaving a tea-coloured liquid with no grit. - Drink it. Warm milk works as well and is gentler on the taste. Some people stir it into coffee, which hides the taste but pairs it with caffeine, so a first month is cleaner without.
- Rinse the spoon. Resin sets hard when it dries.
Cold water works but slowly; the resin sinks and takes several minutes of stirring. Boiling water is unnecessary, and pouring it over resin on a spoon tends to set the outside before the inside dissolves.
Timing: what is convention and what is evidence
Morning, before food, is the traditional pattern in Ayurveda and the most common one among people who take it now. It is also convention rather than evidence. None of the three trials in the table compared morning against evening or fed against fasted. Pandit split the dose into two, morning and evening; Keller and Pingali gave one dose a day without specifying the hour in the abstract. If timing mattered in a measurable way, nobody has measured it.
What the trials did share is consistency: the same dose, every day, for weeks. That is the variable that matters. Pick an hour you will not forget, morning with the kettle for most people, and keep to it.
Two practical notes. Shilajit is bitter and mineral, and a minority of people find it sits heavily on an empty stomach; if that is you, take it with food, which no trial suggests will change anything. And if you take it in the evening and find it keeps you up, move it to the morning. That is an individual observation, not a known effect, and it costs nothing to act on.
A first month, written honestly
The most useful thing a dosing guide can do is set the observation window correctly, because the wrong window produces the wrong conclusion in both directions.
Days 1 to 3. Nothing should be expected, and anything noticed is more likely expectation than resin. A single spoon of a humic extract is not a stimulant. If you feel a sharp change in the first three days, be sceptical of it.
Week 1. Start at the lower end of the range, a rice grain or two, once a day, for tolerance. The most common complaint in trials is mild digestive discomfort, and starting low is how you find out whether you are in that minority before it matters.
Weeks 2 to 4. Move to the dose you intend to stay at, typically a small pea, and hold it. Keep everything else as constant as you can: sleep, training, caffeine, other supplements. If you change two things at once you will not know which one did what.
Day 30. Compare notes against day 0, honestly. The earliest measurement in any shilajit trial came at eight weeks, so a month is the shortest window that even approaches the literature; how long shilajit takes to work sets out each trial’s timeline. If you notice nothing at all, that is a legitimate outcome and one that some proportion of every trial’s participants reported.
The trials that ran for a year found no serious adverse events at 250 mg or 500 mg per day, which is the best available evidence on continuous use. Beyond a year there is no evidence either way, because no trial has run that long. Nobody knows what indefinite daily use does, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing.
Cycling, doubling up and stacking
Cycling. The idea that shilajit must be taken in cycles with breaks is widespread and unsourced. No trial cycled it; all of them dosed continuously for the study period. Taking a break does no harm and is a reasonable way to check whether you notice the absence. It is not a requirement.
Doubling up. The 1,000 mg per day used in the most recent trials is the highest dose in the human literature, and there is no evidence that more than that does more. There is also no reason to think it does. If a small pea a day is not producing a result you can observe, a larger pea is unlikely to.
Stacking. Shilajit is often paired with ashwagandha, and the two are in the same capsule in one of our blends. No trial has tested the combination, so any benefit of pairing them is inference. The practical advice is the same as for any two changes: start with one, run a month, then add the other, so you can attribute what you notice. Questions the trials do not answer, answered anyway
Does dose scale with body weight? No published trial adjusted the dose for weight. Everyone in the Keller trial received 250 mg or 500 mg whether they weighed 70 kg or 100 kg, and the bone density trial gave the same two doses to every woman in it. There is no evidence for a per-kilogram dose in people, and the rodent doses that sometimes get converted into one, hundreds of milligrams per kilogram, are not a basis for anything a person should swallow. Use the trial range and adjust for tolerance, not for weight.
Can I take it with coffee or tea? You can, and many people do. The only practical objection is that caffeine is itself a change in how you feel, and running a first month on shilajit and a new coffee habit at the same time makes the month uninterpretable. Tannins in strong tea bind some minerals, which is a reason to separate them by an hour if you care about the mineral fraction, although the mineral fraction is small enough that it is not worth losing sleep over.
With alcohol? No trial has looked at it and there is no reason to expect an interaction, but there is also no reason to combine them. An evening drink and a morning dose do not meet.
On training days? The strength trial dosed every day, training or not, and measured at the end of eight weeks rather than around a session. Nothing in the literature supports taking it before a workout for an acute effect, and a humic extract is not the kind of thing that acts in an hour. Treat it as a daily habit, not a pre-workout.
What if I miss a day? Take the next dose at the usual time. Do not double up. The trials measured effects over weeks of steady exposure, and one gap in that pattern changes nothing measurable.
Is there any point taking it if I feel nothing? That is the honest question most guides avoid. Some participants in every trial reported nothing they could feel, and the outcomes that did move, bone density, a strength decline after fatigue, a hormone panel, are not things a person can feel. If you are taking shilajit for a felt effect and a month has produced none, you have your answer for you, whatever the trials say about a group.
Who should not take it
These exclusions apply regardless of dose, brand or format.
Iron-overload conditions. Shilajit is iron-bearing. In a 91 day rat study, liver iron was raised in the group given the highest dose, which in a supplement taken daily is the wrong direction for anyone who already stores too much iron. The NHS describes haemochromatosis as an inherited condition in which iron builds up over years and can damage the liver, joints, pancreas and heart, and notes it is particularly common in people of Celtic background. If you have haemochromatosis, transfusion-related iron overload, or have been told to avoid iron supplements, do not take shilajit.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid. A 2018 case report in Gynecological Endocrinology describes a 37-year-old pregnant woman with persistent hypertension and low potassium after six months of mumijo, diagnosed as a licorice-like pseudohyperaldosteronism that resolved when she stopped. No trial has recruited pregnant women, and one case report is the entire literature.
Children. Not tested in anyone under eighteen. Not for them.
Prescribed medication. No interaction studies exist for shilajit. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist first, particularly with anything affecting potassium, blood sugar or the liver.
Diagnosed conditions. A supplement is not how a diagnosed condition is managed, and shilajit is not authorised for any health claim in the EU. If you are taking it in the hope it will act on something a doctor has named, that is a conversation to have with the doctor.

Storage and handling
Keep the jar closed, at room temperature, out of direct sun. Purified resin keeps for years; it is a stable, low-moisture humic material, and the main thing that changes with time is stiffness. A resin that has gone hard has usually dried a little and is still fine; warm it and it softens. A resin that has gone mouldy, which is rare, was not dried properly and should be discarded. Do not store it in the fridge, which makes it unworkable, and do not decant it into plastic, which it stains permanently.
Keep it out of reach of children in the same way you would any supplement.

Can I take shilajit every day?
The longest published trial gave 250 mg or 500 mg daily for 48 weeks and reported no serious adverse events. Shorter trials at up to 1,000 mg per day report mild digestive complaints in a minority of participants. Nothing is known about daily use beyond a year, because no trial has run that long.
Who should not take shilajit?
Anyone with haemochromatosis or another iron-overload condition, because the resin is iron-bearing. Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding. Children. Anyone on prescribed medication should ask a doctor or pharmacist first, and anyone with a diagnosed condition should not be using a supplement to manage it.
